How awful was the Blunder...???
Posted by Vinod Basi
After India's vote in the UNHRC resolution against Sri Lanka on war crimes, there was national wide furore amongst the journalist fraternity calling it an "Awful Blunder", "India has let down a friend", "Geo-political shift" and what not...
I personally thought for the first time this government has showed some spine. It was not a compromise on our non-alignment policy, it never was... I'm not trying to fathom if LTTE was a terrorist organisation or a liberation force, but it is just that we cannot see any race of ours suffering in any part of this world and this vote sent a strong message to the Lankans, infact to the world community as well.
If political analysts felt 'We have let down a friend', it is an awful blunder on their part. They weren't our friends, they were just our beneficiaries. Sri Lankans pretty much knew their needs and they had it coming from our neighbours for over a long period of time.
After the Indo-China war in the 60s, the Rubber-Rice treaty was signed with the Lankans by our estranged eastern neighbour. Chinese built the Lankan infrastructure from bridges to dams, from ports to airstrips. The Chinese had their presence strongly even when we had the Lankan's commercial profits running. There was a time when Sri Lankan airlines just survived on India passengers, when their ports survived on the commercial activity of Indian cargos. When the USD 1billion Hambontota port was opened and built by the Chinese, India should have woken up to the back-stabbing, but we let our aids flow no matter what. On the otherhand, Pakistanis never had any treaty of sorts but they had their military and trade interests in the Island nation for a visibly long period of time.
Sri Lankan dailies called "India a loser in Geneva", never mind we have set a strong example to the rest underscoring our sovereignty is not dictated by Geo-political interests but rather by the needs and need of our fellow Indians elsewhere to live in dignity.
Once the Lankan president Mahinda Rajapakse said," People come here, build infrastructures, trade and go. But only India stays". They knew deep down that they share cultural and social likeness with only the Indians not with the Chinese or the Pakistanis. Having said that, If the vote against them has brought about a Geo-political shift and Chinese closer to them, then so be it... We are not perturbed.
"There are no permanent friends or enemies in politics, only the needs of the masses which coins who with whom".
The Indian government should have no remorse, it should never waffle nor mollify, but stand firm on their stance. Because we unlike the world around us are not looking for tangible benefits.
And even if we are perturbed by the war-mongers around us, remember
"We are the only race with a blessing on our heads".
Jai Hind...
